Easy Guide To Common Weeds (Red flower)

SCARLET PIMPERNEL Anagallis arvensis

Type: Annual Broadleaf

Height: Up to 20cm (8 inches)

Flowering: June through to September

What’s it like?

This annual weed does not last for more than one year. It is not often found in well m maintained lawns. It is sometimes mistaken for Common Chickweed weed because they have similar leaves, but the Pimpernel has larger more square-shaped stems. Their leaves are light green and oval in shape forming pairs at intervals on their stems. They have distinct flowers, each having five petals mostly orange or red in colour. This weed prefers damp soil conditions. It is low growing and short lived.

Why is it a problem for your lawn?

Scarlet Pimpernel will only cause problems in neglected lawns, as long as you have a good lawn care programme you should not have too many problems with this weed.

Control

This weed is only a problem in neglected lawns and can be eradicated by regular mowing. If necessary a selective weed killer should control this weed but a further application after approximately 6 weeks may be necessary.

RED CLOVER Trifolium pratense

Type: Broadleaf Creeping Perennial

Height: Up to 50 cm (20 in)

Flowering: May to September

What’s it like?

Red Clover thrives in wet to dry conditions and on well-drained loam soil. It has dark green leaves with three leaflets with a crescent shaped mark on each leaflet. This weed has large, hairy stalk that is attached to the stem. Typically this weed has a pinkish red flower and is round in shape. The Red Clover is distinguishable from White Clover because it is generally a more upright, clump-forming plant with more elongated leaflets.

Why is it a problem for your lawn?

An invasive weed that will happily take over wanted plants in your garden

Control

Red Clover can be controlled with cultural practices, including proper lawn mowing and watering. Physical removal (i.e. “weed pulling”) can be effective, although you will run the risk of spreading the seeds to additional areas of your lawn and landscaping. Glyphosate is a common ingredient in over the counter herbicides and can be effective as red clover weed control. Be careful not to allow this herbicide to drift on to surrounding plants as they could be affected as well. If the infestation is hard to kill a professional lawn care company will use a specially selected herbicide to kill this weed as it will move throughout the weed-killing it completely including the root and safeguard surrounding wanted plants.
