Queen wasps begin nest building in spring as they emerge from hibernation. Roof voids, wall cavities, garden sheds and under patios are favourite areas. Worker wasps will be coming and going in early summer with sugar to feed the larvae in the expanding nest. The nest continues to grow and expand over summer swelling wasp numbers, which have known to be in excess of 1,000 individuals.
The Queen stops producing larvae in late summer and food becomes scarce for the workers, making them more aggressive. This is when most stings occur as the wasps become more persistent in their pursuit of the food they need. Wasps can ruin outdoor events at the best of times but at this time of year they are a particular nuisance.
Most nests do not survive the winter, but the Queens usually hibernate inside or nearby. This means it is more likely that you’ll have another nest the following year if left untreated.
