The Lawn Care Business, is it for you?

These days you will see lawn care business in most towns throughout the UK. They do offer a great opportunity for people to establish their own business and get out of the rat race. But is it the right opportunity for you?

Aged 45 I was forced to look at starting my own business, it wasn’t really a choice. I had been made redundant for the second time and had spent a year looking for a job, with no success. Whilst I wasn’t on the breadline, I was lucky my wife had a well-paid job, I could see our savings dwindling and I did not want to be a kept man for the rest of my life.

I discovered the lawn industry after attending a franchise exhibition. I’m not sure why but I immediately warmed to the concept. I arranged to meet with the franchising company to learn a little more about the opportunity. Of course, they thought I would make a great success, after all they would be making money as well as me. I wanted to be sure myself that the opportunity was right for me before I took the plunge.

The problem was it was difficult to find good advice about the subject.

Fast forward 21 years and I can now say it was the right move for me, but it was a gamble!

The lawn business has really helped turn my like around, not only my life but those who joined me in the business, therefore I have a lot the be thankful for and now it’s time to give back a little.

I wrote a short guide to help people who are looking at the business, it’s not a sales book, we won’t follow you up, it purely meant to help you answer the six questions that I needed to answer 21 years ago.

I knew that in order to take control of my income and working life, I would have to work for myself, rather than working for others. However, choosing a business to start on my own was not that simple. I was initially drawn to Lawnscience because Terry supplied me with lots of information from the start, which helped me to understand the business. Another great advantage to Lawnscience is that they gave me the opportunity to create my own bespoke trading territory, something which most franchisors could not have done. Having met with Lawnscience on several occasions to discuss their business and the way in which they operate, my mind was made up. This was always going to be a daunting decision, but I was given the opportunity to speak with all of the current franchisees about their experiences, which gave me the confidence to take the leap into self-employment. After my initial training, my marketing plan fired into action and the phone rang and rang and rang. Today, after only 7 months of trading I have already surpassed my first years sales target by over £10,000, and the year is far from over.
