Moss is an opportunist plant that thrives in wet or damp conditions. These conditions enable it to reproduce and when there is space available on the lawn for it to establish. Once established within a lawn, it can spread quickly by the distribution of millions of microscopic spores making Lawn Moss Control harder.

Most lawns suffer from a little moss, but an extensive moss issue is normally a sign of one or more of the following issues:

• Excessive shade, resulting in the grass thinning due to the plant not receiving sufficient sunlight to effectively photosynthesis. Photosynthesis supplies the nutrients required for healthy plant development.
• Poor soil fertility, creating a weak, thin grass cover, leaving space available within the lawn for the moss to colonize.
• Soil compaction, creating weak growth as a result of the grasses’ shallow root system.
• Insufficient drainage, leading to prolonged period of dampness is ideal for the establishment and growth of moss.

In order to resolve a lawn moss problem, it is important to not only treat the infestation but also the underlying cause.

Too much Moss on your lawn may just be a temporary problem, as a result of a recent drought or heavy waterfall. If it is a more persistent problem you will need to investigate further. On new lawns, it is often down to poor site preparation.
