Why Does My Lawn Have Dry Patches?

Quite Often, We Get Asked, Why Does My Lawn Have Dry Patches?

Dry, patchy grass is frustrating, especially when you’ve been keeping up with mowing and watering. But don’t worry, dry patches are a common issue for UK lawns in early summer, and most of the causes are fixable once you know what to look for.

Here’s a breakdown of the most likely culprits and how to tackle them.

🌞 1. Underwatering or Uneven Watering

Hot weather means your lawn needs more moisture, but too little or uneven watering can cause patches to dry out.

What to look for:

  • Straw-like or brown areas
  • Soil is dry and cracked
  • Grass doesn’t spring back after being walked on

What to do:
Water deeply once or twice a week rather than little and often. This helps grass develop deeper roots. Always water early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation.

🐾 2. Pet Urine (Especially Dogs)

Pet urine contains concentrated nitrogen, which can scorch the grass and cause small yellow patches.

What to look for:

  • Circular yellow or brown patches
  • Often with a dark green ring around the outside
  • Usually appear in the same spots

What to do:
Water the area immediately after the dog’s been to dilute the nitrogen. Reseed damaged patches and consider creating a specific doggy “toilet” area in the garden.

🚜 3. Compacted Soil

Heavy foot traffic or naturally clay-heavy soil can become compacted, which prevents water and nutrients from reaching the roots.

What to look for:

  • Water is pooling on the surface
  • Patchy, weak grass growth
  • Hard, dense soil

What to do:
Aerate the lawn — either with a garden fork or a mechanical aerator. This improves airflow, drainage, and root development.

🍂 4. Thatch Build-Up

A thick layer of thatch (dead grass and roots) just below the surface can prevent water from soaking into the soil.

What to look for:

  • Spongy feel underfoot
  • Discoloured or patchy grass
  • Water runs off rather than sinking in

What to do:
Scarify the lawn to remove thatch. Early summer is okay for light scarifying in small areas, but heavier jobs are best left until autumn.

🐛 5. Lawn Pests

Insects like chafer grubs and leatherjackets feed on grass roots, which causes the lawn to thin out and dry up.

What to look for:

  • Grass lifts easily like a carpet
  • Increased bird or animal activity (digging for grubs)
  • Patches of weak or dying grass

What to do:
If pests are suspected, a professional treatment may be needed. At Lawnscience, we can inspect, identify the pest, and recommend safe, effective control methods.

🦠 6. Lawn Diseases

Fungal infections like Red Thread can show up as unsightly dry or discoloured areas.

What to look for:

  • Patches with reddish, pinkish growth
  • Irregularly shaped brown or dead-looking areas
  • Occurs more in humid or wet conditions

What to do:
Improve airflow and drainage. Avoid overwatering and make sure your mower blades are clean and sharp. If the disease is persistent, we can provide specialist treatments that stop the problem in its tracks.
